Sealants

A successful way to prevent cavities is with dental sealants. Because molars are not entirely smooth and have many deep valleys and uneven surfaces, bacteria can easily weezle their way into the back of your child’s mouth, causing cavities and tooth decay. If this is ignored, the bacteria can wreak havoc on the tooth, causing infection and even nerve damage. Dental sealants provide a bonded barrier to protect against this bacteria in between regular dental visits. Talk with Dr. Ellison to find out if this may be beneficial.

Family Dentistry FAQs

We want your initial visits for your children to be a good experience with an outstanding relationship with everyone in the office from the minute they walk in the door. This relationship will build trust and confidence which is important for the lifelong relationship we are committed to building for them with a dentist.

The American Dental Society recommends that children visit the dentist at the age of 2. Some children are ready for this and can come in and get their teeth cleaned and some are not quite ready. The ones who are not ready to get a cleaning should at least have a professional dentist perform an exam to determine if there is decay before it gets too bad (bad habits such as bottle feeding at bedtime can lead to extensive decay!) What works best is when you can bring the child in with a parent or an adult for their cleaning. It’s important to let the child watch the process, get to know the environment, and most importantly our wonderful team. We love to make them feel special and give them a toy and let it be a good experience for them. Then, once they come in again for their own cleaning, they already know us and feel comfortable. Plus, they already have gotten to see you get a cleaning and saw it go well! Children are often very proud to do their cleanings and do well this way.

Most children should go to the dentist every 6 months. Again, some teens that are not brushing and flossing enough may have to come in more regularly to prevent infection and decay.

Baby teeth are SUPER IMPORTANT to keep until the permanent tooth underneath is fully developed and comes in to replace the baby tooth. These baby teeth hold the space for the permanent tooth to move into and if the baby tooth is lost too soon, this may cause crowding for the adult teeth. Permanent teeth come in from age 5-18. Each tooth needs to be evaluated based on how old the child is, how much longer that tooth is needed, and how deep the decay is. We certainly do not want to leave the decay if we still need the baby tooth and we don’t want the child to be in pain.
